11-5 Friday night at Le Stade Municipa
#1
When heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez was forced out of his latest title defence with an injury, the UFCs debut in Mexico lost much of its lustre. Ottawa Senators Gear .Fabricio Werdum and Mark Hunt will try to restore that appeal when they fight for the interim belt at UFC 180 in Mexico City on Saturday night. This event was supposed to be a showcase for Velasquez, the Mexican-American champion who has a strong following in Mexico. Instead, the oft-injured Velasquez hurt his right knee and dropped out of his bout against Werdum (18-5-1) last month, sending the UFC scrambling for something to show the 21,000 fans who sold out the Arena Cuidad de Mexico in eight hours. The promotion came up with a matchup between Werdum, the 37-year-old Brazilian veteran on a four-fight winning streak, and Hunt (10-8-1), the 40-year-old Australian brawler with a history of thrilling fights.Yet even the fighters in the main event cant pretend their showcase is an ideal situation, knowing theyre fighting for a belt with an asterisk. Its not for the championship, Hunt said. Cain is the champion. Its a shot to fight the champion. Its bad news for Fabricio, but its great for me. Ive already won just by being here. Six years ago, people were laughing at me. Now Im here and Im winning. While Hunt is seizing his unlikely opportunity, Werdum realizes he has little to gain and plenty to lose when he steps in with Hunt, one of the UFCs most powerful punchers.Werdum, who famously beat Fedor Emelianenko in a 2010 Strikeforce bout, patiently worked his way up the ranks after rejoining the UFC three years ago, only to watch his long-awaited title shot turn into an interim fight when Velasquez couldnt stay healthy. At least hes probably the new crowd favourite: Werdum, who speaks fluent Spanish, plans to walk to the cage to the strains of Cielito Lindo, the classic Mexican song.I was supposed to fight Cain Velasquez, and all the fans were supporting him. Thats normal, Werdum said. Now theyre supporting me, so I chose a walk-out song for Mexico. Theyre going to be very happy, and Im going to use this extra energy. The undercard features rising Mexican-American welterweight Kelvin Gastelum against veteran title contender Jake Ellenberger, along with featherweights Ricardo Lamas and Dennis Bermudez.Hunt got the call from the UFC one month after he stopped Roy Nelson in Japan for his fifth win in seven fights, losing only to former UFC champion Junior Dos Santos in that stretch. Its an impressive run for a former kickboxer who lost six consecutive MMA bouts during a four-year stumble ending in 2010.Hunt took the fight with Werdum on less than four weeks notice despite being well over the 265-pound heavyweight limit. He approaches the drastic weight cut and Mexico Citys altitude challenges with his usual aplomb. Its disgusting what Im putting in my body, Hunt said. No carbs at all. Im basically working on fresh air. All the guys and I are just walking around here delirious, but its what youve got to do. A lot of protein, a lot of fish. Its disgusting. ... When I retire Im going to release a book: How Mark Hunt Lost 21 Kilos in 3 1/2 Weeks, and its going to make me a lot of money. People are going to buy it.Although Velasquez cant fight, he still travelled from Californias Bay Area to Mexico City to promote the event, constantly expressing regret about his injuries. Velasquez hopes to fight next year on another card in Mexico, but realizes he cant choose. It is frustrating, because I want to be active and keep fighting, Velasquez said. What can you do? All I do is go out there and train and fight and this stuff happens. Theres nothing I can do. Just keep positive. Ive been here before, so stay positive and get better. Chris Wideman Jersey . Josh Mazzola drove in five runs to lead the Goldeyes (20-12) past the Capitales 11-5 Friday night at Le Stade Municipal in Quebec City. Gabriel Gagne Jersey . The 31-year-old, a two-time CFL lineman of the year, was among the most coveted free agents on the market. The Windsor, Ont., native will be especially important to a team that has lost veteran quarterback Anthony Calvillo to retirement and is expected to go with the less experienced Troy Smith and Tanner Marsh this season. http://www.senatorsauthority.com/authent...rs-jersey/ .ca. Kerry, In the closing minutes of the second period of Game 4 between Pittsburgh and Columbus there were the remnants of two broken sticks behind the Pittsburgh net.CLEVELAND -- Michael Bourn didnt take much time to savour the first walk-off hit of his career. Racing around the bases as if his two-run homer in the ninth inning was still in play, Bourn was mobbed by his teammates when he reached home plate as the Cleveland Indians completed a three-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies with a 6-4 win on Sunday. "I was pretty excited," said Bourn, who threw his helmet into the air after rounding third before being doused with water. "I was flying around the bases. I was happy not just because I hit a walk-off, but that we got the sweep against a good team. It was a really good moment I wont forget. My emotions were really going." Bourn hit an 0-1 pitch into the right-field seats off Adam Ottavino (0-2). Mike Aviles singled and took second on George Kottaras sacrifice before Bourn hit his second home run of the season. The walk-off win was Clevelands fourth of the season. "In that situation you just look for a pitch to hit, and when you get one to hit you have to make sure you hit it," Bourn said. Scott Atchison (2-0) worked around a two-out double in the ninth by striking out Charlie Blackmon to end the inning. Colorado completed a 2-7 road trip and has lost four straight for the first time since last September. The Rockies lost two of three in Atlanta and Philadelphia before being swept away by the Indians. "We battled and we came up short," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "Thats the way it went again today. A timely hit sometimes can change a game, but weve had a hard time getting it this whole trip. If you dont take advantage, it will come back and haunt you. It did again." The Rockies fell to .500 for the first time since April 20 when they were 10-10. Colorado is 12-21 on the road. Josh Tomlin allowed three runs and matched a career high with eight strikeouts in 5 2-3 innings. He left with a 4-3 lead, but Blackmons sacrifice fly off Bryan Shaw tied the game in the seventh. Lonnie Chisenhall, who had six RBIs in the series, broke a 3-all tie in the third with a sacrifice fly. Jhoulys Chacin allowed four runs in five innings. The Indians scored three runs on one hit -- Michael Brantleys RBI single -- in the first. A bases-loaded walk to Jason Giambi and David&nbbsp;Murphys sacrifice fly scored the other runs. Derick Brassard Jersey. Chacin created his own problems in the inning by walking three and committing a throwing error. Aviles RBI single in the eighth gave Cleveland a 7-6 win Saturday and a four-run inning was the key in Fridays 5-2 victory. Indians manager Terry Francona believes his team is finally producing some timely hits. "Were getting them, and were doing better situationally too," he said. "Its a lot easier when you keep the line moving like weve been doing, when you take your walks, like we did in the first inning. For a while there we had nobody hot." Corey Dickerson hit a two-run homer in the second. Justin Morneaus RBI groundout tied the game in the third. Brantleys leadoff double started the Indians third. He took third on a fly ball and scored on Chisenhalls fly out to right. Brandon Barnes leadoff double and a walk to Jordan Pacheco started the seventh. After a sacrifice, Blackmons fly ball scored Barnes, who slid home ahead of Bourns throw. Colorados key hitters struggled during the trip. Carlos Gonzalez reached on a bunt single to start the eighth, but was 2 for 20 in nine games. Troy Tulowitzki broke an 0-for-13 streak with a third-inning single, but ended the trip in a 3-for-23 slump. Colorado, the highest-scoring offence in the National League, managed only 26 runs on the trip, and struck out 38 times in this series. "We had to pitch well," Tomlin said. "Thats a good-hitting team." Chisenhall, normally a third baseman, made his first career start at first base. NOTES: Francona said the teams training staff thinks Carlos Santana (concussion) could return Friday. Santana has started light hitting drills and his activity will increase as he progresses. ... Rockies 3B Michael Cuddyer made his second straight start at the position. Prior to this weekend, he hadnt played there since 2010 with Minnesota. ... Indians RHP Zach McAllister (sore back) will pitch on a rehab assignment at Class A Lake County on Wednesday. ... The Rockies have Monday off before beginning a three-game home series with Arizona on Tuesday. ... Indians RHP Justin Masterson (2-4) takes on Red Sox RHP John Lackey (6-3) in the opener of a three-game series Monday in Cleveland.
